BINOMIALS:
В английском языке много выражений, представляющих собой пары одинаковых или созвучных слов, соединённых союзом and или предлогом. -------------------------------------------------------------------- *by and by = later on (постепенно) *up and down = in both directions (взад и вперёд, с места на место) *back and forth / to and fro = to and from somewhere (туда-сюда) *on and off = occasionally (иногда) *here and there = scattered round (повсюду) *first and foremost = most impotantly (в первую очередь) *rough and ready = poor standart (плохого качества) *slowly but surely = gradually, with certainty (постепенно; медленно, но верно) *time and again / now and then = from time to time (время от времени) *back to front = the wrong way (шиворот-навыворот, задом наперёд) *to be sick and tired of = very tired of, disgusted with (до смерти надоесть, сыт по горло) *law and order = efficient policing (законность, правопорядок) |
